San Diego has 42 independent school districts educating more than 470,000 kindergarten through 12th-grade students. Calendar years for most schools, including all high schools, vary, but most start in early September and end about the middle of June. There are 176 schools operating on year-round schedules. Public schools in California are funded largely through state monies allocated through the annual state budge process. The San Diego Unified School District is the eighth-largest urban school district in the country, serving over 138,000 students. SDUSD provides a variety of educational programs and options for students of all ages. There are also more than 100 private schools in San Diego. There are private schools associated with religious organizations as well as private schools for children who are physically, mentally or emotionally challenged.
