Urban sprawl is the term associated with uncontrolled growth in metropolitan areas. Crowded roadways, long commutes, pollution and other environmental concerns are just some of the problems created with communities are allowed to grow and be developed without much oversight. More recent trends in neighborhood and subdivision development seek to address these and other negative by-products of urban expansion and the increasing demand for adequate and affordable housing. Increased oversight inevitably means more "red tape" for prospective developers, but the results for communities where caution has been exercised has led to more careful use of the land, more attractive housing designs and lots of interesting innovation in the use of land and space.
