Portuguese locals are known to be very inviting and whilst they are very pleasant from first sight, if you take the time and effort to learn the language even if it is just a little bit then they will almost certainly be appreciative because you took the time to learn and this if anything will help you make new friends.
People throughout the European Union do tend to be very friendly and to make your holiday run a lot smoother, learning a slight bit of Portuguese will work wonders because wherever you visit, there will be several non English speaking communities and why getting caught out? If necessary then arm yourself with a dictionary and try your hardest.
