The 19th century were to see even further problems and in 1807 the country refused to rise to Napoleon’s demands to control the Continental system and an invasion from the French soon followed which resulted in Lisbon being captured in the same year. The English (once an enemy of Spain and Portugal) assisted the once doomed nation and managed to remove the last of the French troops in 1812 which helped regain their freedom.

Top Fact: Due to the war, Portugal lost the nation of Olivenca to the Spanish and for some time Rio de Janeiro in Brazil was to become the Portuguese capital from 1808 and 1821 but as independence was regained, Lisbon once again became the capital and this still remains to this day.
