There are many ways for you to travel through the city of Manila during your one-week stay, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Here are some of your options:
• Rail. The Metrorail (Mass Rail Transit) only currently has four lines open but is still developing. The Light Rail Transit has 16 stations and sells magnetic-strip tickets for one trip, the day, or extended periods of time. Traveling by rail can be very simple and affordable, but watch out for pickpockets!
• Bus. There are many private bus companies throughout Manila, so no uniform passes exist. This can be a very safe way to travel; however, the costs vary based on condition of the bus, where it goes, etc.
• Taxi. These are easy to catch all over the city and can carry a group of people; however, there is always a high chance of being overcharged.
• Jeepneys. These are bright jeeps covered in all sorts of decorations that travel everywhere in the city all day long. They are inexpensive and full of personality, and they handle about a third of the city’s commuter travel.
• Driving. It is possible for an individual 25 or older with an international driver’s license to hire a car if desired; however, Manila is known for a lot of traffic, driving pollution, bad drivers, and nearly impossible parking. Because of this, driving is rarely a good option for visitors.
• Vehicle hire. It is also an option to hire bicycles and scooters, however, this is strongly warned against because of the many accidents occurring on these vehicles in Manila.
