A pet door does you no good if your pets don’t use it. Some dogs and cats may be naturally curious and obedient and will quickly learn to use the door, but even if your pets are not compliant, you can train them to use the new pet door.

The basic way to train a pet to use a pet door is to show your pet the door, and then stand on one side of the door, leaving your pet on the other side. Then, encourage your pet through the door using your voice and/or a treat. Once your pet makes it through the door, celebrate with it.

If this simple method does not work, try holding the door open for the pet, then coaxing it through, letting the door fall gently on your pet. Do not, however, push your pet through the door. If your pet still has trouble keep the door completely open, and then gradually add a paper towel, then a piece of cardboard, and finally the real door so that the pet gets used to the idea of the door. Of course, all this effort is just for getting your pet to use the door; housebreaking your pet is a whole different matter.
