A comfortable crate can be a viable option when housebreaking your dog or simply training him to stay off the household furniture. Once your pet is trained to accept the crate, leave the door open during the day. Your dog will nap in the crate by choice. Even though crates have a utilitarian appearance, they are preferable over your bed. Pets find comfort, safety and security in their own space. A variety of crates are available at most pet supply stores. Crates, like dog beds, come in a variety of styles and materials. Many are collapsible ensuring easy storage.

Plastic: These crates are constructed of molded plastic with a separate top and bottom. Ventilation is provided on the sides and the door is made of wire. One advantage to the plastic crate is its portability. Its construction ensures a lightweight, handy dog carrier and a comfortable bed. Many crates are generic in color, but they are also available in decorator colors. Another advantage to the plastic crate is that most meet federal regulations for air travel. A sturdy travel crate can cost the consumer up to $150, but the dog crate designed for the smaller traveler can run $50-$100.

Wire: The popularity of the wire crate should not be diminished. It can be purchased in different dimensions to fit your dog’s size. Selection should be based on high quality steel wire, size of your dog and on your household needs. Some crates are collapsible for storage and convenience. Careful choice is needed because some crates offer collapsibility when in fact they are next to impossible to fold. Some are flimsy even though they are not meant to be folded for storage or transport. The ideal crate is sturdy and easily folded. Wire crates are often more desirable for dogs because of excellent ventilation, and dogs are offered more view to family activity. Wire crates are not approved for plane travel. They vary in cost with many options available. A sturdy crate begins around $50 and a designer color wire crates begin around $80. Crates designed for the safety and comfort of the large dog can cost the dog owner up to $200.
