For Peru, fish is a major part of the daily diet and for the region it is the second largest activity for the economy and results in a large source of income and jobs for the local population.
Commercial fish farming is mainly based around the production of shrimp, scallops and trout. Iquitos is the capital of Loreto and is the largest city throughout the entire northern Peruvian jungle and a massive 75% of the total fish production for Peru. The most common rivers used to catch fish are the Nanay, Itaya and Amazon; tribes such as the Cocamas, Boras and Witotos are regularly found fishing along one of these rivers.
