An outdoor kitchen with a built-in barbecue is a serious undertaking, but one that you can enjoy for years to come. When built to last, a quality outdoor kitchen will serve you well. Here are a few important tips:
Location is a key element. Your outdoor kitchen is usually best if situated close to the house, especially the indoor kitchen. Protection from the elements of nature should be a consideration so that you can take full advantage of the opportunity to enjoy your outdoor kitchen. Beware of overhead trees, roofs and decorations when placing the grill.
Make comfort a priority. Since your outdoor kitchen will be place to enjoy, it is important to create an area that will be comfortable to work in as well as relaxing and enjoyable for you and your guests. Counter tops should be from 32 to 36 inches high and at least 24 inches deep and furniture should be comfy but easy to move for maximum usability.
Plan for utilities. Consider
plumbing and electrical outlets for appliances and lighting. Determine whether access will be routed from the house or whether you will supply power in another way.
Invest in reliable construction. If you choose a heavy masonry-type barbecue, you will have to have a concrete pad. There are specific requirements that need to be met for a safety and dependable construction. Be sure to hire an experienced contractor to insure that you have the best results.
Confirm code requirement for your area. Before beginning your outdoor kitchen project, check zoning requirements to make sure you are building the legal distance from property lines. A building permit my not be required for the outdoor kitchen’s construction but you will probably need permits for any electrical or
plumbing work. In most cases, a gas grill insert must be framed by non-flammable material.
