If you want to get a gift for the first time griller, go with basic grilling tools. These tools will enable the griller to lift, flip, move, clean, and protect his grill, and each often costs under ten dollars.
• Tongs: Tongs allow you to grab hold of a piece of meat on the grill. Once you have it, you can move it, flip it, and carry it to a dish. Both iron and stainless steel tongs are on the market.
• Fork: A grill fork is similar to tongs in that it provides you with a firm grip on grilled food. Forks often hold food more firmly than do tongs, but you have to shake them a little or use another tool to remove the food from the fork. Many grillers use either tongs or a fork, but not both.
• Spatula: Spatulas are the best tool for flipping food on the grill; simply slide the spatula under the item, lift, and flip. Purchase a spatula with a long handle and a large blade.
• Mitts: Even though you use long-handled tools to cook on the grill, you should still have a grill mitt. Not only does a grill mitt protect you from the grill’s flames, but it also allows you to safely lift hot grilling dishes, such as skewers, off of the grill.
• Grill Brush: Every time you use your grill, you should clean off its grates using a wire grill brush. Fortunately, it only takes a minute to run this brush over the grates until they look relatively clean. Approximately once a year, you can take the entire grate off the grill and thoroughly clean it.
• Grill Cover: A grill cover protects your grill from the elements. Rain will not cause the grill to rust, and sunlight will not fade the grill’s colors. Some grill covers go all the way to the ground, while others cover only the body, and not the legs, of the grill.
You can move your grill inside instead of purchasing a grill cover, or use other kitchen utensils to substitute for a fork, spatula, tongs, and mitt, but these basic tools make grilling much easier. Having specialized grill tools can also take some of the stress out of grilling and thus make grilling more enjoyable, even before you taste the fruits of your labor.
