» What kinds of materials are use to make porch swings?
The traditional porch swing is most commonly made of wood, although it other materials can be used, such as metal or wicker. A variety of woods are used in making porch swings. Cedar and teak are the most durable woods to use for building porch swings. Other woods used are pine, maple or oak. In order to extend the life of the swing, it is important to finish or coat the wood with a stain or paint. Cedar and teak are sometimes left in their natural states because of their durability, and because some people desire the silvery weathered look that the wood takes on after being outdoors over time.
Metal and wicker are also used to construct porch swings. Wicker porch swings look complete with decorative seat cushions which also add comfort. Today’s natural wicker stands up to weather much better than in the past. A newer material, a resin wicker, is also resistant to rain and weather. Metal porch swings are generally heavier than wood or wicker porch swings. Metal swings have wide range of styles, from very plain to customized with very elaborate designs. Because metal is heavier than wood or wicker, metal gliders are often seen on porches as a variation of the porch swing.
The most modern porch swing material used today is PVC. A PVC porch swing has the look of wood, but will never need painting because it won’t chip.
