» Teak vs. Nyatoh and Other Woods
Teak wood has always been a popular material for out door furniture, but in recent years Nyatoh wood has been making headway. One of the biggest reasons is because it has similar properties, but can be found with a cheaper price tag. You can find steamer chairs made of other hardwoods, such as Cedar and Oak, but they are not nearly as durable for outdoor use.
- Teak Wood - Teak wood is a hardwood naturally resistant to water, warping and harsh weather. This means you can leave it out year round without any additional protection and it will still last for as long as 75, sometimes even 100, years. Most steamer chairs made of Teak go for around $500, but there is the occasional chair procurable at the bargain price of $250.
- Nyatoh Wood - Like Teak wood, Nyatoh starts out bright in color and ages to a grayish tone. Its original color, which is more golden than Teak, can be maintained with periodic applications of Teak or linseed oil. It does handle outside conditions very well, but not nearly as well as Teak wood. I have found websites marketing this wood as being stronger and more durable than Teak wood. There has been research proving this as a falsehood. Please do not fall predator to such a claim. This does not mean steamer chairs made of Nyatoh would be a bad buy; it just means it is cheaper for a reason. You can get a decent chair made of Nyatoh for around $200.
- Other Woods - When buying outdoor furniture made of any wood other than Teak or Nyatoh it will not last as long. Most other woods will rot if not kept out of the elements and properly cared for. This means more staining, more cleaning and more often than not more sanding. Because these chairs do not have the same out door longevity of either Teak or Nyatoh you should not have to spend more than $100 for this type of steamer.
