There are a few companies who have been making steamer chairs for years. If you buy from these companies you can expect to pay much more, but you can also anticipate a much higher quality chair.
  • Lister - Founded by Robert Ashton Lister in 1883, this company has made its name providing some of the most famous palaces, gardens and hotels with outdoor furniture.  When this company first started out Lister recycled wood from old British war ships to make most of his pieces.  Now, they only use the most mature trees.  This gives the wood a darker color and a longer life span. These chairs generally go for at least $500 without a cushion and for around $675 with a cushion. I found one steamer chair actually retailing at $963 without a cushion.
  • Westminster- If you are concerned about the environment, but still want Teak wood, this is a good brand to consider. Their wood comes from plantations in Indonesia who are ecologically managed and supported by Perum Perhutani certification. This is to help ensure Teak wood will remain a protected species and will continue to flourish. You can expect to spend around $500 on average when purchasing from this company.
  • Suffolk- This is another company who has conservation in mind. They only use plantation grown Teak wood to help maintain Teak wood numbers. They can be purchased for around the same amount as a Westminster steamer.
