Inspect your fireplace every season. Make sure masonry is in tact and not degraded by the heat. For metal fireplaces, make sure to check for rust.


Check for gas leaks. Check gas logs for gas leaks and make sure all aspects of the gas mechanism are operational. Call a certified repairman if there are any problems.


Inspect the chimney or vent every season. Make sure that the chimney or vent is clean and unobstructed.


Check for Creosote build up. Creosote is a black flammable residue that condenses on the inside chimney’s and flues overt time. If possible avoid burning green wood, which increases creosote buildup. To prevent chimney fires, clean the chimney each season or sooner of creosote is built up.
