A fireplace insert is usually made of cast iron or plate steel. It is designed to be installed into an already-existing fireplace. This fireplace might be part of the original house or added later, and usually requires a chimney. Outer glass doors are common enough to be the stereotype; an inner door provides the insulation layer.

Most inserts come with a blower. These blowers can be manually run or can be controlled by a thermostat. A blower can greatly increase an insert's efficiency because it helps spread heat throughout the room.

An insert can either fit in the fireplace or protrude on the hearth. This latter version is more efficient because the sides, top, and bottom give off radiant heat, increasing the surface area that is heating the room.
