In choosing a fireplace insert, you must ask yourself and know the answers to several questions.

Where will the insert go? You must have a fireplace to put it in. If you lack a fireplace but want the insert's benefits, you must add a fireplace to your home.

What fuel do you want? Your main choices natural gas, electricity, wood, pellets or coal. Bear in mind how much each will cost and the burn time each will provide. How much maintenance will your type of fuel need?

What size is your fireplace? Take measurements. You need to know the height and width at the opening and at the rear. Measure the depth of the fireplace on the top and on the bottom. You also need the depth of the hearth.

Do you have proper venting for your fuel? Depending on your fuel, you will need a working chimney, direct venting, or possibly no vent at all. U.S. regulations require a chimney liner.

What features do you want? Do you want plate steel or cast iron? Do you want self-cleaning glass doors? Do you want a blower? Do you want a thermostat or remote controls to regulate the fire?

What style do you want? There are a number of colors and designs available.

What will the total cost be? Calculate this from the cost of the insert itself, the cost of delivery and installation, the cost of the annual cleaning, and the cost of annual fuel.
