A fire back should all but be mandatory in a fireplace. Most people think they are just used for aesthetic purposes. This is so untrue. They save energy. They will make your fireplace more durable. At one time, it was impossible to find a fireplace that did not have a fire back. Today most people do not consider them necessary, because they don’t know the importance of having one. The fact they look great is just a bonus.
