The Tulsa metropolitan area offers some of the finest entertainment available, ranging from exciting sporting events to outstanding music and theatre. The downtown area is home to numerous museums, one of the world’s finest zoos, and numerous parks and observatories.

 

 

Tulsa has many terrific opportunities and offerings for entertainment. The city has some of the Midwest’s best museums and galleries. The Philbrook Museum of Art includes art collections from a number of different cultures, including Africa, Asia and Native America. The Gilcrease Museum offers incredible historic displays. The J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum, located in the suburb of Claremore, is home to the largest private gun collection in the world. Other museums and galleries in Tulsa include the M.A. Doran Gallery, the Sunbelt Railroad Museum, the Tulsa Air and Space Museum, the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art, and the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame.

 

Parks and outdoor nature are featured in Tulsa. The city’s River Parks are home to many festivals each year, and they have jogging trails, picnic areas, and many other attractions. If you visit the Oklahoma Aquarium, you can walk right through the shark tank! If you love animals but that sounds a little scary for you, you’ll definitely want to check out the Tulsa Zoo, one of the best in the world. In a recent contest, Tulsa’s zoo was selected as the best in the United States. There are over 140 parks in the Tulsa Metro area, with such features as golf courses, swimming pools, fitness centers, meeting facilities, ball fields and picnic shelters. Other attractions include the Tulsa Municipal Rose Garden and the Oxley Nature Center, both with breathtaking displays and exhibits.

 

On the other hand, if you liked the water at the aquarium but not the animals, perhaps the Big Splash Water Park is for you! “The coolest fun under the sun” has huge slides and several different pools for you to enjoy. If you’re going to go to this park, be sure to check out the “Splashpass” information, as it will give you the best bang for your buck!

 

 

While Tulsa isn’t home to any major professional sports teams, there are still several opportunities to take in quality sporting events in town. If you’re a baseball fan, the Tulsa Drillers are a minor league team playing in the Colorado League. If basketball is more to your liking, the Tulsa 66ers play in the National Basketball Association’s Developmental League. This gives you an opportunity to see tomorrow’s NBA stars before they arrive in the league! If it’s football you seek, Tulsa is home to one of the most entertaining sporting events around, the Arena Football League. The Talons are Tulsa’s team in this league. Minor league hockey (the Tulsa Oilers) is also available.

 

Tulsa is also home to several institutions of higher learning, most of which offer exciting sports of all kinds. Here is a list of these institutions: Langston University, Northeastern State University, Oral Roberts University, Rogers State University, St. Gregory’s University, and the University of Tulsa.

 

And don’t forget high school football, which is almost as big in Tulsa as it is in Texas!

 

 

The city of Tulsa offers many exciting opportunities for lovers of the performing arts. The DiscoveryLand! Amphitheater, one of the city’s most popular attractions, features performances of the musical “Oklahoma!” by Rodgers and Hammerstein all through the summer months. The Brady Theater and Cain’s Ballroom are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Other locations throughout Tulsa at which one can experience quality performances include the Clark Theatre, the Nightingale Theatre, the South Tulsa Children’s Ballet, the Tulsa Opera, the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, and Theatre Tulsa, among many others. 

 

 

If you’re visiting Tulsa, one of the places you simply must see is Greenwood. Early in the history of the city, on Greenwood Avenue, a black business district had begun to flourish. In the decade leading up to 1920, Greenwood become a well-known center for jazz and blues music. The area became known throughout the country as “Black Wall Street.” Sadly, in 1921 the United States’ bloodiest race riot took place in Tulsa, and it had a terrible effect on Greenwood.

 

Since then, the Greenwood Cultural Center has been erected. In 1970, state leaders—both black and white—got together and agreed that Greenwood had played an essential role in the city’s development fifty years earlier, and that something should be done to recognize its part. So a $3.5 million grant was dedicated, and the Greenwood Cultural Center is the result.

 

The Greenwood Cultural Center is educational in nature, desiring to educate all visitors about the city’s history. It focuses its charitable contributions on the residents of Tulsa and Tulsa County, and of the state of Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame, alluded to earlier, is part of the Greenwood Cultural Center.
