Day One

On the first day of vacation, you always want to sleep in a little bit. Depending on what you do for a living, this could mean sleeping until 7:00 AM or sleeping until noon. We’ll compromise and say you’d like to sleep until 9:30, which should give you time to catch your hotel’s continental breakfast.

After breakfast, hop in your car (or rental car) and head to 5701 East 36th Street North, where you’ll find the Tulsa Zoo, one of the best in the entire world. By the time you’re finished seeing the hundreds of different kinds of animals, including the 2+ acre elephant exhibit, it will be near lunch time. Head to one of the River Parks (there are over 140 of these located all over town…just look for the signs!). On your way, find a hole-in-the-wall restaurant you’ve never heard of and pick up lunch to go. After all, what’s vacation without trying something new? Take your lunch to the River Park of your choice and enjoy a private picnic on the beautiful, lush lawn. After lunch, drive (or walk, if you happen to be close enough!) to 2727 South Rockford Road, the location of the Philbrook Museum of Art. This art museum, voted the top attraction in the city, houses collections from all kinds of cultures, including African, Asian, and Native American.

These activities will take you right up to dinner time, Tulsa offers some great places for you to have dinner! In order to truly get into the Oklahoma culture, we recommend The Rib Crib (8040 South Yale Avenue) for dinner. If you’re not a fan of barbecue, try Pomodori’s (219 South Cheyenne), a fine Italian eatery. After dinner is over, try one of the city’s frozen custard places for dessert! Ask around to find out if any of the city’s renowned festivals are taking place while you’re there. If so, get directions and head out to the Tulsa State Fair (late September and early October), the Jazz on Greenwood Festival, MayFest (May), the Gatesway Balloon Festival (August), or one of the many others.

You’re probably worn out, and we’re just getting started! This probably is a good time to call it a day, though, so head back to your hotel and get some rest…We have a full day tomorrow!
