» Suburban Real Estate
Because most people relocating to Oklahoma City will choose a suburb, we will spend the majority of our time discussing the different suburbs in town and what they have to offer. Oklahoma City has a number of outstanding suburbs to live in, surrounding the city on all sides.
We’ll give you a brief description of each of the major suburbs. Remember, if you’re planning to relocate, it always pays to do extensive research before you select your new place of residence!
North
Mayfair and Belle Isle
These middle-class neighborhoods are in the area of Penn Square Mall and Baptist Hospital. Lake Hefner, a favorite destination for bikers and runners, is also in this area. The Northwest Business District is part of this area.
Nichols Hills and The Village
Nichols Hills, north of Belle Isle, is one of the wealthiest of the suburbs. There is a country club, beautiful homes, upscale business and gourmet restaurants.
The Village, even further north, is middle class but improving. It seems out of place next to the luxurious Nichols Hills, but the homes are still very nice, and the proximity to Lake Hefner is increasing the property value.
Edmond
Edmond is one of the most popular suburbs of Oklahoma City, with a population over 80,000. Edmond is well known for rejecting most developmental projects in favor of more and more gated residential communities. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the state, and is home to the University of Central Oklahoma.
Guthrie
Guthrie’s population is around 10,000, and it is another northern suburb. It is a well known tourist attraction site and is home to a historic preservation district.
East
Choctaw
Choctaw, another quickly growing suburb, is located in the eastern part of Oklahoma County. The population is around 10,000, and Choctaw has more room to grow than any other area in Oklahoma City.
Shawnee
Shawnee, population 29,000, is the largest of the eastern suburbs of the city. Interstate 40 provides access to Shawnee, only about 30 minutes from Oklahoma City.
South
Moore
Moore, located down Interstate 35 from Oklahoma City, is the city’s so called “blue collar” suburb. It is the fastest growing suburb in the entire city with a population of 50,000, and it has further expansion plans.
Norman
Norman is the largest suburb of Oklahoma City, with a population of about 110,000. It is also the home of the main campus of Oklahoma University. Norman is a strong city in and of itself, with bustling businesses, college life, and beautiful residential areas.
West
Bethany and Warr Acres
These western suburbs have some of the most competitive tax rates in the metropolitan area and are attracting business from all sectors. One of the city’s private institutions of higher learning, Southern Nazarene University, is located in Bethany. The beautiful Lake Overholser has been considered as the home of a future resort.
Yukon
Yukon, population 21,000, is the birthplace of country star Garth Brooks. It is a largely Czech community, celebrating Czech culture with the Czech Festival in October and the Chisholm Trail Festival in June. Yukon is located west of Oklahoma City in Canadian County.
Mustang
Mustang is a quaint, hospitable suburb of 15,000 southwest of Oklahoma City. This is one of the fastest growing and wealthiest of all the suburbs.
