The city of Oklahoma City is comprised of 621 square miles, and is the third largest city by geographical area in the entire country. The metropolitan area is made up of eight counties and 12 major suburbs surrounding the city on all sides. Some of these include Edmond, Guthrie, Bethany, Moore, Norman, Choctaw and Shawnee. Demographically speaking, Oklahoma City is predominantly Caucasian (60%), with other population segments including African-American (18%), Native American (4%), and Asian (4%). The other 14% are Pacific Islanders, a combination of two or more races, or another race. The metropolis includes several institutions of higher learning: Oklahoma City University, University of Central Oklahoma, Rose State College, Oklahoma Christian University, Southern Nazarene University, Mid-America Christian University, and American Christian College, among others. The state’s two largest universities are well-represented in Oklahoma City, with branches of both Oklahoma University and Oklahoma State University in town. There are also a number of community colleges, technical colleges, and seminaries in Oklahoma City.
