Binding machines are the fun tools in the mailing department. Binding takes an ordinary report or mailing and turns it into a professional presentation. There are many different types of bindings, and which binding is appropriate is determined by the future use of the document(s). Giving your mailing a professional style by binding it into book form may make the difference in whether or not it gets the attention it deserves. Giving your mailing a head start toward being taken seriously starts with the binding machine.

The most common binding styles are:

• Tape Binding

o Tape binding is accomplished by placing the binding tape around the edge of the document, then heat sealing it to “glue” the ends of the pages together.

• Spiral Binding or Wire Binding

o Using wire, a spiral binding machine curls through the holes in the edge of the documents, giving them the appearance of a spiral notebook once it is complete. Wire binding is also accomplished by creating a double loop pattern.

• Plastic Comb Binding

o Plastic comb binding machines can punch the holes and open the plastic comb, but most require manual insertion of the pages onto the cone. The low cost of plastic comb binding makes it very popular.

• Perfect Binding

o Perfect binding involves gluing pages together to create a book or notepad. This is the least durable and least expensive of all bindings.

There are other, more expensive types of bindings, and your printing expert can give you pointers on how to choose the right one for your project. However, these types of bindings are easily accomplished in the average office setting.
