Eastern Norway is old and modern at the same time and has a lot to offer the visitor. From the deepest of forests where wolves live, a Michelin rated restaurant in Oslo, skiing in tall mountains, visiting the Viking museum, sailing along the rocky coast, thousand year old farms in the valleys, to a steaming night life in the cities.

East Norway is made up of seven counties: Oslo, Akershus, Ostfold, Vestfold, Buskerud, Telemark, Hedmark and Oppland. Oslo is the nation’s capital and is the heart of the region. This is the most populated region of the country and has a variety of cultural and outdoor activities to offer. Oslo is often called the outdoor capital of Europe because of its enormous non-inhabited forests and its location at the end of a 100-mile long fjord.

South of Oslo are many small cities with a cozy atmosphere. Ostfold has the most historic monuments, and Vestfold has been famous for shipping since the Viking times. Akershus is the green belt around Oslo and houses many of the capital’s suburbs.

The Olympic city of Lillehammer is located in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley. It is a district famous for old farms and winter sports. There are still active mountain farms in the area, especially in Valdres and in the spectacular mountain region of Jotunheimen.

Hedmark is located further south, at the Swedish border, with deep forests and the highest number of wolves in the country.
