There are many places in Norway that offer insight into the culture and lifestyle of another ear. Norway has many wonderful churches, many of them built in stone. The most famous churches are the stave churches. There are also a number of fortresses, especially in the larger cities. Norway has few castles in the traditional sense, though there are many fine manor houses. Most of the historical buildings are open to the public, though opening hours may vary greatly.

Norway has a great variety of museums and exhibitions to chose from. Many outdoor museums consist of old buildings that have been preserved for posterity. Indoor museums range from the large national museums to tiny museums that are specialized in a particular area. Museums often have a special temporary exhibition with events where the public can take part. There are galleries throughout the country that exhibit the works of traditional artists as well as more experimental ones.

The Norwegian Forestry Museum concentrates on hunting, trapping, logging and freshwater fishing from ancient times to the present day. There’s a nature information center, geological and meteorological exhibits, woodcarvings, an aquarium, nature dioramas with all manner of stuffed native wildlife, including a mammoth, and a 20,000 volume reference library. Outdoor exhibits in the museum grounds and across the bridge on the island of Prestoya feature a large arboretum with 80 Nordic tree species, a couple of historic sawmills and old bog iron plant and riverside freshwater fish ponds.
