The Blue Ridge Parkway was authorized in the 1930’s as a public works project during the Depression-era. It took over fifty years to build through the mountainous terrain. The Parkway was the nation’s first and longest rural parkway. The Blue Ridge Parkway actually spans over state lines as it connects Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. The Blue Ridge Parkway attains altitudes of more than 6,000 feet!
