Many people who are searching out volunteers feel desperate, like they have to accept the offer of anyone’s time. It’s a “Beggers can’t be choosers” mentality. It is true that you should be thankful for offers to help; however, the recruitment of volunteers, whether it’s for a tiny job or a huge one, should be just as meticulous as the recruitment of paid staff members would be. This is not implying that you should reject the help of anyone or consider them unworthy. However, properly evaluating a potential volunteer allows you to figure out their strengths and weaknesses and place them in an appropriate role.

It may happen that you have someone wanting to volunteer with your organization that you really have no place for. There is never such a thing as a bad volunteer, just a volunteer in the wrong position. So, if you don’t have a position that can utilize any of their strengths, personally put them in contact with another place at which they can volunteer.
