Many people talk about grants. You may have heard someone speak about hoping to start an organization with grant money. But what is a grant? A grant – just as the word implies – is simply a financial donation. The amount of the contribution varies from grant to grant, but they all provide financial support for research and other activities in particular subject areas or fields of study. They are divided into categories such as awards, endowments, matching funds, and more.

While some grants have specific time frames, others are ongoing. Some are available anywhere, while others have geographic restrictions. Many grants are awarded to non-profit organizations, but some go to other recipients such as individuals. The money for grants is donated by many different people and businesses for a variety of reasons. Because writing grant proposals is a very intricate and potentially difficult art, it is important to follow the grant guidelines very specifically and perhaps consider hiring a grant-writer.
