Their families are very close-knit. It is common for several generations to all be living under the same roof. The women of the household take care of the elderly as well as looking after the children. This type of living situation is beneficial in cultivating and strengthening relationships between family members such as the relationships between grand parents and grand children. This is different from the social norms that we are used to here in the United States. These relationships can help to account for the greater mental health of people in Nicaragua than in the United States, as well as the successful aging from the mental health aspect. The family units in Nicaragua focus on the family, not getting ahead, money, or success. They center around relationships, not the almighty dollar. This is simply different from the philosophy that a vast majority of the people in the United States operates on. Not necessarily better or worse, it is simply different. The culture has a huge influence over the family units of the Nicaraguan people, and the culture in Nicaragua is very different from the culture in the United States.
