The British eventually began to aid the natives of Nicaragua that were left in an attempt to oppose Spanish power in the Caribbean and obtain the country of Nicaragua for themselves. With the help of the British and also the French invasion of the country of Spain, Nicaraguans won their independence from Spain in 1838. The influence of Spanish culture can still be seen on the culture of Nicaraguans today. Many, if not all of the major cities in the country were established by the Spanish. All of the major cities are located on the western coast or in the Central region of the country, which is the part of the country that the Spanish controlled for several hundred years. While the Spanish no longer rule the country of Nicaragua, their influence on the food, dress, architecture, and music is still very evident in Nicaragua. However, thanks to the British impact, Nicaragua has a unique blend of Spanish and British culture.
