With a land full of ancient history, captivating art, magical landscapes and even cowboys and Indians, New Mexico has something to intrigue even the most discriminating traveler. The legacies of the Indian, Spanish and Anglo settlers that fought for control of this land over the years still co-exist in New Mexico today, giving the culture a one-of-a-kind flavor and personality.
The most alluring trait of this historic state is the landscape – there are mountain ranges, deserts, forests, mesas, rivers, snow and sand. This diversity provides a plethora of recreational activities and makes New Mexico a very desirable destination. The southern part of the Rocky Mountains reaches the northern part of New Mexico, and the Chihuahuan Desert spans north from Mexico into the southern part of the state. Everywhere in between is studded with breathtaking National Monuments and State Parks. So whether it’s sightseeing, skiing, fishing, hiking, kayaking or snowmobiling that you prefer, New Mexico will not disappoint.
On top of the natural wonders of New Mexico, it is also a state full of art. It is easy to understand where artists receive their inspiration – one look at the golden glow of the sun setting over adobe pueblos, mountains and mesas would be enough inspiration for anyone to paint, write or compose. So much so that New Mexico has grown to become the third largest art market behind Los Angeles and New York City, even inspiring the great Georgia O’Keefe to set up residence in New Mexico. On your visit, you will find hundreds of museums, galleries and live theatrical performances that depict the wonderful history of the area.
The state is rich with culture, primarily because it is occupied by three very different groups that each contributed their influences on the society. The Native Americans, the Spanish and the Anglo people have lived together in this state for more than 400 years. You can imagine the variety of traditions, food, culture and political views! 38% of the population is Hispanic, while there are 22 pueblos and tribes that each has their own sovereign lands and governments. This is truly a unique place.
