The Northwest corner of the state is known as “Anasazi” country and is home to the country’s largest Navajo Indian reservation. Here, visitors can explore ruins of the Chaco Canyon archaeological site and see what is left of the complex road system, pueblo dwellings and villages in Chaco Culture National Historic Park. If this interests you, you won’t want to miss the Aztec Ruins National Monument either. Another must-see National Monument is El Malpais, which is a volcanic badland with spectacular cinder cones, ice caves and lava tubes.

Sports enthusiasts take note, some of the best cross-country skiing in the state occurs in this region. To set up your expedition, contact the Southwest Nordic Center. In the warmer months, this area is ideal for hiking, fishing and hunting.

Before leaving this region, be sure and catch a ride on the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad which is the longest and highest narrow-gauge steam railroad in the country. You won’t be disappointed.
