New Jersey is known as the Garden State. The state bird is an Eastern Goldfinch, which was introduced on January 29, 1935. In June of 1950, the official state tree was named, a Red Oak. The state flower was originally brought up to the Legislature in 1913. Unfortunately the resolution ended in 1914, leaving the violet with uncertain status for the next fifty years. In 1963 and attempt was made to officially designate the violet as the state flower, but it failed. The state flower was officially named in 1971. New Jersey is known as the Pathway of Revolution. Over one hundred battles were fought on New Jersey soil. New Jersey was settled in 1618 by the Dutch.
