Although many industries have a stake in the Atlantic City region, the area’s principal business is tourism. The tourist season is strongest between Memorial Day and Labor Day, but since the casino’s came to Atlantic City in 1978, there are no longer many slow times during the year for the hospitality industry. The casino industry employs more than four thousand people, with at least that many working in casino service business. With twelve casino’s operating and the Borgata, a joint venture between Boyd Gaming and MGM Mirage that will bring at least four thousand more jobs to Atlantic City. The gaming industry continues to be the engine of the South Jersey economy. Businesses that serve the gaming industry have located in and around Atlantic City, creating an environment that revolves around the fortunes of the casinos. Conventions also play a large role in the business of Atlantic City. Meeting fill the region’s hotel rooms in the winter, while large public shows often bring thousands of day-trip visitors to the Atlantic City Convention Center. On the Mainland, the largest employer is the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center, which is located adjacent to the Atlantic City International Airport. The FAA Technical Center is one of the principal testing facilities for air traffic control and other airport systems, as well as being the primary training facility for air marshals. Health care is also a large industry, with more four thousand employee’s scattered throughout the region. Several fine china, glass and plastics companies operate in the region, as well as construction of boats and luxury yachts. Hundreds of businesses employing ten people or less also thrive in the region, providing a rich and varied business climate. Various economic development programs are available to assist small businesses in their quest for excellence.
