The growth of Atlantic City has been aided in no small part by several public agencies and public-private partnerships. These efforts have resulted in a dramatically improved Atlantic City. Instrumental in making the casino industry the most secure in the nation has been the Casino Control Commission. When casino’s were legalized in 1978, gaming existed only in Nevada. To ensure integrity, New Jersey implemented rigorous regulations that prevented anyone with a questionable past or character from becoming involved in the industry. As a result, the gaming industry has thrived in Atlantic City with a regulatory scheme that is a model for other jurisdictions throughout the nation. In 1981, the establishment of Casino Reinvestment Development Authority was designed to revitalize Atlantic City using casino investments, In less than twenty years, the CRDA has developed hundreds of housing units in Atlantic City, helped to renovate the historic Boardwalk Hall, built city parks, demolished abandoned buildings and provided economic stimulus to businesses in the region. The Atlantic City Special Improvement District is a non-profit corporation formed by Atlantic City businesses in early 1992 to improve the businesses environment in the city, The Special Improvement District includes businesses within a specific mid-town district. The SID sponsors special events, provides environmental services in the district and contributes funding to businesses that desire to upgrade their facilities and services. The South Jersey Transportation Authority operates the Atlantic City Expressway and the Atlantic City International Airport. The Authority also was the lead agency in the construction of the Atlantic City-Brigantine Connector, which links the foot of the Atlantic City Expressway with the Marina district of Atlantic City and Brigantine. The Pleastville Urban Enterprise Zone offers sales tax rebates and other incentives for businesses located within it’s boundaries. Other city, county and state agencies and! organizations work closely with business and community groups to serve the needs of local residents.
