» The White Mountains
For many, the primary reason to visit New Hampshire is to enjoy the White Mountains. Several mountain villages encircle the peaks and cliffs, and most offer great options for lodging. North Conway is the commercial hub of the area, and just about every budget motel chain has an operation here. There are numerous options along Route 16. The Comfort Inn and Suites and the Briarcliff Motel are great choices. For a bed-and-breakfast experience, try the Snowvillage Inn, an eighteen-room country inn situated on ten acres of woodlands.
Leaving North Conway and venturing around the mountains, the city of Jackson offers Eagle Mountain House. It sounds small and quaint, but it is actually a large-scale old world resort, offering 93 rooms and a 280 foot wrap-around grand veranda.
The Inn at Thorn Hill was originally designed by Stanford White (famed New York City architect) in 1895. The interior is in the Victorian style, with an elegant and romantic sensibility.
Adair Country Inn in Bethlehem has a rich history. The Olmstead Brothers, the visionary planners of New York City’s Central Park, designed the lush grounds. The Georgian Revival home dates back to 1927. In nearby Littleton, Thayers Inn offers one of the best values on the mountain. They have 40 rooms and suites, all with modern conveniences at a great price.
Sunset Hill House in Sugar Hill, New Hampshire, is located high atop Sunset Hill Ridge, offering some of the best views in all of New England. In nearby Franconia is the Franconia Inn, an easy-going inn perfect for cross-country skiers (miles and miles of trails begin just outside the front door).
