The Merrimack Valley is anchored by the cities of Manchester and Concord. Manchester is northern New England’s largest city, and its industrial heritage is still evident in the town’s urban feel. Despite Concord’s role as New Hampshire’s capitol, it manages to maintain a small-town friendliness and sociability. The gold-domed State House holds court to the rest of the town’s varied and diverse architecture. Concord is home to the Museum of New Hampshire History, which is full of exhibits creatively displaying the state’s heritage.
Outside Concord is the Canterbury Shaker Village. Of the old Shaker communities that used to thrive in New England, this one is preserved the best. There is an informative and interesting museum and a couple of dozen buildings located on almost 700 acres.
