High-End Accommodations

The Die Port Van Cleve is located in the heart of Amsterdam, behind the Royal Palace on the Dam Square.  It is housed in an 18th century building that was the original Heineken brewery. It has been recently renovated. Hotel Pulitzer is a combination of some 25 old canal houses, renovated and combined to create a lovely hotel with spectacular canal views. Located in the heart of the tourist district, the grand Hotel de l’Europe was built in 1896.

The Amsterdam American Hotel is located on the Liedseplein, a square with some of Amsterdam’s best restaurants and shopping. It is designed in a unique mix of Gothic and Art Nouveau architecture. The Amstel Inter-Continental Amsterdam has hosted super-star guests since 1867. It is Amsterdam’s ultimate luxury offering.

For other high-end options, check out the Blakes Amsterdam located along the Canal Belt, or the Sheraton Amsterdam Airport, if you need a room close the airport.

Moderate Accommodations

The Hotel Estherea was built from a cluster of 17th century canal houses. It is located on the Singel canal and has been family run for three generations. It is a great all-around choice for lodging in Amsterdam: great location, fairly reasonable price, and wonderful atmosphere. A few canals over is the self-explained Canal House, obviously also housed in some of Amsterdam’s former residences. The adjoining houses date back to the 1630s.

The Amsterdam Wiechmann is located along the Canal Belt, in the middle of just about everything. Many of the rooms have a canal view, but they are more expensive.

Other choices in the moderate price range include the Agora and the Seven Bridges, both located along the Canal Belt, the Avenue Hotel in the Old City, the Acro, a quiet townhouse near Vondelpark, and the Best Western Eden, located near the Rembrandtplein.

Budget Accommodations

The Amstel Botel provides a unique lodging experience: it is Amsterdam’s only floating hotel. The rooms are located on four decks, connected by an elevator. The best rooms have a view of the water, so make sure you request that when making reservations.

Located in the Old City, the Clemens is just a quick walk from Anne Frankhuis, Amsterdam’s most popular attraction. It was renovated in 1999. The Hoksbergen is located on Singel canal. It is a great facility for the price, but be aware this is one of those charming canal house hotels without an elevator.

The Acacia is located in the trendy Jordaan area, a region similar to New York’s Soho or Greenwich Village. The Van Onna is another choice in the same area.

Catering to a young and vivacious clientele, the Winston is one of the options located in a slightly questionable part of town: it is on the edge of the Red Light District. If you are heading to Amsterdam for the history and culture, you will probably want to choose other accommodations. But if part of your reason for journeying to the socially liberally Amsterdam is to experience some of that social liberalness, the Winston might be for you. It is artsy and funky – and well priced.

Other budget options include P.C. Hooft and the Wynnobel, both located in the Museumplein/Vondelpark area. The Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark is a well-run youth hostel.
