When you are planning a visit to Amsterdam, or any other major European destination, it is important to be aware of the differences between American hotel accommodations and what you will find in your vacation city. Americans typically expect a hotel room, particularly an expensive one, to include amenities such as televisions with cable access, in-room safes, large bathrooms with ample counter space, and coffee makers. European hotels are quite different. You can count on a typical, moderately priced Amsterdam hotel to be clean and friendly, but don’t expect American-style amenities. It is simply not the norm in Europe, unless you are paying premium prices.

 

The differences are especially noticeable in the bathrooms. Some European hotel bathrooms can have little more than a showerhead and a drain in the floor. Still, most of them can be counted upon to provide travelers a comfortable stay and warm hospitality. As long as you have your expectations in check and arrive in the Netherlands with an understanding of how lodging is different, you will have a wonderful time.

 

Many of Amsterdam’s hotels are located in former canal houses dating back to the 17^th century. Many of these canal house hotels do not have elevators due to limited space and the prohibitive cost of installing them. If you are staying is one of these facilities, inquire about the presence of an elevator, and ask for a room on the bottom floor if the answer is “no.” Otherwise you may find yourself lugging your luggage up several flights before you arrive at your room. The canal house hotels do tend to offer the most charm, with or without elevators. Staying in one of them allows you the best glimpse back into the 17^th century Golden Age of Amsterdam.

 

In terms of safety, Amsterdam is a strange bird. In general, the city is safe and you can walk around town and enjoy the attractions without fear. But, there are also decidedly seedy parts of town that are better avoided, especially at night. The Red Light District has become a twisted tourist attraction of sorts, so you have the benefit of safety-in-numbers if you choose to venture there, but you should remain overly cautious and aware of your surroundings at all times. There are some perfectly fine hotels located near the more questionable areas of town. Your comfort level and personal preference should determine whether you consider them as lodging options.
