Great Falls was named for the Missouri River waterfalls that Meriwether Lewis described as a "sublimely grand spectacle" when he and William Clark arrived in 1805. The spectacular has since been wedded to the practical, with the damming of the Missouri River near Great Falls for hydroelectric power. Giant Springs State Park and State Trout Hatchery, the Lewis and Clark National Historical Trail Interpretive Center, and the Lewis and Clark National Forest all draw many visitors, and the town in general has a strong and diversified economy. The population is 56,155. The average home price is significantly lower than in Missoula, though the towns are of comparable size; Great Falls homes sell for an average of $129,593.
