The Big Mountain: The Big Mountain ski area is eight miles north of Whitefish, in the northwestern part of Montana. The Hibernation House is the best value; rooms can be had for as little as $70, with $95 being a little more likely during peak skiing season (January through March). Big Mountain also has numerous condominiums, including Edelweiss Condominiums in the ski village and Kintla Lodge near the Tenderfoot chairlift (1-bedroom units range from $150-350 seasonally).

Big Sky: The Big Sky ski area is in the southern part of the state, about 40 miles south of Bozeman. Here you will find the highest vertical drop in the nation, at 4,180 feet, along with 74 other runs. Since this is one of the most popular areas for downhill skiing in Montana, you will find plenty of lodging options from which to choose. The hotels, condominiums, and houses all have their own seasonal schedules; between Christmas and New Year's all are universally most expensive, but some offer deep discounts for the following week, and others for the entire month of January. The Mountain Inn is a pretty hotel in a nice location, and rooms range from $119-227. The Huntley Lodge runs a little higher at around $150-350. Big Sky also has many non-hotel-style options, such as slope-side chalets, rustic log cabins, and privately owned homes. Since the prices do vary so much from week to week, it is best to go to www.bigskyresort.com/lodging/lodging-partners.asp and check the specific dates of your vacation.

Red Lodge: Red Lodge has 60 runs, and is Montana's easternmost ski area. The town itself is rustic, eccentric, and charming. Red Lodge is much smaller than the ski villages at Big Mountain and Big Sky, and advertises itself as having "altitude without attitude." Lodging is available for $45-130 (depending on the season) at the Alpine Lodge, which also has several counterparts elsewhere in town such as the Chateau Rouge and the Yodeler Motel. These are small, locally owned hotels/motels with great rates and few extras. More expensive accommodations are available at the Pollard Hotel, which is in downtown Red Lodge and dates from 1893 ($75-225).
