General Beliefs

According to Prince Albert II in his 2005 speech, the citizens of Monaco believe the following:

• They are a community with their own values, which are similar to their neighbors, but which have a special combination, which set them apart.
• They come from Liguria and Genoa. They are the children of Greece, Rome, and Christianity.
• They adhere to the principles of human rights, which are the fruit of the philosophical reflections of the age of Enlightenment of the French and of the countless reforms and improvements made by the European leaders to the functioning of the constitutional states and supranational institutions.
• They believe in both material and spiritual progress.
• They support free enterprise in the economic sector.
• They believe in the virtue of solidarity to those who do not have the necessary learning, know how, or personal ability needed to take the risks, gain the autonomy, and assume the responsibility to which modern life implies.
• They believe in their role to promote social justice.
• They subscribe to the concept of a social market economy.
• They believe that the team made up of the innovator and the entrepreneur enables progress.

Transportation

Because Monaco is such a small place, only a mile from end to end, most visitors get around by walking. However, there are many free lifts and elevators built in to the hillside to save your legs. There is also a bus system that runs from 7:30 am to 8:30 pm. Monaco buses are a safe, clean, and efficient way to travel. Taxis are another option for transportation in Monaco, but they are scarce. A person may need to call at least a day in advance to reserve one to go to the airport. The Monaco train station is fairly new and operates through tunnels in the mountainside. All trains running between France, Italy, and Menton are obligated to stop in Monaco. Travel by car is also an option, although parking may be a problem. There are public car parks everywhere and are free of charge for the first hour. On-street parking is very limited.

Monaco Grand Prix

One weekend each year, several streets in Monaco are closed off to host the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix. The inaugural race was held in 1929 and was one by William Grover-Williams in a Bugatti. This tight and twisty circuit is also referred to as the “Monte Carlo” since it is held inside the Monte Carlo neighborhood in Monaco. It is a narrow and dangerous course that favors the skill of the drivers over the power of the cars and is considered less safe than other high profile Formula One circuits. It will likely remain on the Formula One calendar though because of its glamour and history.
