Citizens of Kansas City love their sports. The Harry S. Truman Sports complex on the city’s east side features nostalgic Kaufmann Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium where Major League Baseball’s Royals and the National Football League’s Chiefs play their home games. On the west side of Kansas City is Lawrence, KS where the NCAA powerhouse Kansas Jayhawks rule their roost. A newer sport to hit Kansas City is auto racing with the Kansas Speedway which holds NASCAR, IndyCar and other races throughout the year.
Coming soon to the Kansas City sport scene is the new $276 million Sprint Center. This 18,000- to 20,000-seat arena will open on the eastern edge of Kansas City’s new entertainment district in 2007. The arena won’t only host sporting events and concerts, but will also house the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. Rumors around Kansas City whisper that the arena is being built to draw an NBA or NHL team to the city by relocation or expansion.
