In addition to the Nelson-Atkins expansion, there are many tremendous projects popping up around Kansas City.

1) Power and Light District
Kansas City's downtown convention district is experiencing a $4 billion urban renaissance, which includes the new $835 million Power and Light District. The first phase of the district is expected to be completed in late 2006.

The Power and Light District, located within walking distance to the convention center, will be one of the premier entertainment districts in the Midwest. It will feature unique shops, eclectic boutiques, art galleries, bookstores, live entertainment, a mix of restaurants and one-of-a-kind entertainment attractions.

Plans for this nine-square-block entertainment, retail, office and residential district were unveiled in December 2003. A major component of the Power & Light District will be a new world headquarters for Kansas City-based tax giant H&R Block.

2) Sprint Center
On the eastern edge of Kansas City’s new entertainment district, a state-of-the-art, 18,000- to 20,000-seat arena will open in 2007. The $276 million Sprint Center is part of Downtown redevelopment efforts that will transform the area into a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week district featuring restaurants and retail activity.

The arena complex will be located between 13th and 15th streets and Grand and Oak streets in Downtown Kansas City. The visitor experience will extend well beyond national and regionally known concerts and special events – the facility will house the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame

3) The Metropolitan Kansas City Performing Arts Center
A striking piece of architecture is set to transform the downtown Kansas City skyline forever. One of the world’s leading architects is designing a $326 million performing arts center to be built in the heart of Kansas City’s downtown district.

The Metropolitan Kansas City Performing Arts Center will be located south of the Kansas City Convention Center, between Broadway and Wyandotte and 16th and 17th streets on a 17.5-acre lot donated by the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation.

4) Other expansions and new projects
The re-opening of the Hilton President Kansas City, an expansion and renovation to the Kansas City Convention Center, a new rapid transit line, an expansion to the Liberty Memorial Museum and Monument Expansion, an Advertising Icon Museum and a new 750,000 sq. ft. shopping and entertainment district are also in the works.
