Detroit has many suburbs, offering just about any living environment you are seeking. From small towns with quaint downtowns, larger cities with diverse ethnic populations, suburban neighborhoods with modest homes, to exclusive communities with palatial mansions, the tri-county area has it all. Transportation in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties makes it relatively easy to get around, so it is advised to consider the broad tri-county area before narrowing down your community of choice.

Auburn Hills: Auburn Hills is home to the entertainment complex The Palace of Auburn Hills, as well as newer subdivisions and older homes. Interstate 75 serves as the main street for this community, which also includes many high-tech corporations.

Bloomfield Hills and Bloomfield Township: Home to power brokers, professional athletes and celebrities, Bloomfield Hills could be called the Beverly Hills of southeast Michigan. It is one of the richest communities in the world and is home to fine homes, shopping and great schools. Bloomfield Hills has a population of 44,000 and has 17,000 homes scattered among winding roads, hills and peaceful lakes.

Farmington and Farmington Hills: Two separate cities in Oakland County, Farmington and Farmington Hills are both growing communities of subdivisions.

Ferndale: Older homes characterize Ferndale, which is located at the intersection of I-696 and I-75. It is the home of restaurants, nightclubs and light industry.

Novi: A growing community with convenient freeways and good schools, Novi is home to many new people and shopping.

Royal Oak: Home of the Detroit Zoo, Royal Oak is known for its hip downtown, which is crowded day and night with people seeking dining, shopping and entertainment. While this vibrant downtown allows Royal Oak to maintain the appeal of a small town, it offers many of the attractions of a larger metropolis. The city is diverse, and is home to a mix of people, age groups, incomes and residential home styles.

Dearborn: Located in Wayne County, Dearborn is of course most well known as Ford country. But the city also features a wide range of housing, an extensive park system, colleges, and shopping. Dearborn’s large Middle Eastern population has resulted in restaurants, bakeries and markets along its east side.

Grosse Point Farms: This is one of the most affluent and exclusive communities and includes some of the country’s best schools, clubs and lakefront parks. It is situated on the shores of Lake St. Clair.

Hamtramck: A hip city, Hamtramck is known for its two-story flats, corner bars, and multiethnic population. In fact, two-thirds of students in the school district come from homes where English is not the primary language.

Sterling Heights: Located in Macomb County, this area is filled with subdivisions of modest and reasonably priced homes. It is known as a good place to raise children because of the low taxes, low crime and good schools. In fact, the community was rated the ninth-best “Family Friendly” suburban city in the country, according to
Population Connection, a Washington, D.C. nonprofit environmental organization. It also ranks as the safest city in Michigan based on F.B.I. statistics in 2002.

Utica: This is a small town located among large suburban communities. Because of its size, most of the homes are within walking distance of the quaint downtown. It also offers modern conveniences and shopping on Route 59.
