If you choose to get around Detroit by automobile, a map will come in handy. City planners started to model Detroit’s streets after Washington D.C., but changed their plans to a grid system during periods of rapid growth. As a result, most streets downtown are one-way. A bus system is available, as well as antique red and brass trolleys from Times Square to the Renaissance Center, and an English double decker bus in the summertime. In 1987, the People Mover was created. It is a three-mile elevated light rail system that operating throughout the central business district.
