The name Baltimore, oddly enough, is related to the older English, rendered ‘Calvert’. This name came to England in the later years of the 1060’s. ‘Baltimore’ is the name for a person who tended cattle, but obviously this family or families eventually rose to prominence, eventually becoming landed and establishing a heraldic coat of arms. The family was first found in Yorkshire, England, and had apparently been there from time immemorial. The name came stateside circa 1659. Baltimore County and hence the township itself were so rendered for a Lord Baltimore and his Barony of Baltimore in the Kingdom of Ireland. Records exist of some Calverts in the New England states in the 1600’s.
