The Maldives islands have historically been known for the farming rather than the fishing. Just underneath the soil is a hard sedimentary layer of sand and stone. This holds moisture in the soil and helps the process of composting.

More recently, tourism and the fisheries make up the main elements of the Maldivian economy. In addition to these, shipping, banking, and manufacturing are also growing on the Maldives. The countries they trade the most with are India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
