Becoming a State

After the Revolutionary War, which cost Maine the lives of many men and much financial debt, the settlers turned their eyes to getting freedom from Massachusetts and becoming their very own state. During the War of 1812, there was much controversy about the unwillingness of Massachusetts to help protect the people of Maine from British raids and that is credited as the turning point for their push for statehood. This was granted to Maine in the Missouri Compromise of 1820 making it the 23rd state. Originally, Portland, located on the southeast coast, was chosen as the state’s capital, but was later changed to Augusta, which was centrally located in the middle of the state. Augusta remains the capital of Maine.
