Maine is widely known for gorgeous lighthouses. The state boasts nearly 70 lighthouses and major beacons up and down its Atlantic coastline. The following are the most famous and popular with visitors:

·        Nubble Light: Nubble light is located on Cape Neddick on the southern part of the coast. It was first illuminated in 1879 and an estimated 250,000 people visit it annually.
·        Portland Head Light: The one lighthouse you must visit is Portland Head Light found on the grounds of Fort Williams State Park in Cape Elizabeth. There is a museum and gift shop also located by the lighthouse. It is said that this lighthouse is the most visited, photographed, and painted in the United States.
·        Burnt Island Light: Burt Island Light is located on the west side of Boothbay Harbor. It was built in 1821 and the last lighthouse in Maine to be converted from kerosene to electric in 1962. The lighthouse can be seen from many points along the immediate coastline and several cruises pass by and stop on the island.
·        Bass Harbor Head Light: Built in 1858, Bass Harbor Light is another famously photographed lighthouse located on the northern coastline near Acadia National Park. It is interesting to note that the keeper’s house is used as the residence for the Coast Guard Commander.
