Mullerthal includes east-central Luxembourg and borders each of the other regions except for Red Rocks. It is similar in size to the smaller regions, (Moselle Valley and Red Rocks), and it forms about one-third of Luxembourg’s eastern border with Germany.
Mullerthal is lovingly known as Little Switzerland, in large part because of its beauty. The region’s woodlands are a haven for hikers, cyclists, rock climbers (it has impressive rock formations) and campers. The heart of the region is Echternach, which is an historic medieval town. Archaeologists have found remains of churches from the early eighth century, and today the Basilica of St. Willibrod has more than ten thousand pilgrims every year. The city is also home to the Museum of Prehistory and a medieval town hall.
A short distance east from Echternach is Beaufort, which is the home of the beautiful Beaufort Castle. Beaufort, as well as Larochette, are prominent cities, but Echternach forms the heart of the region. Look there first for hotels and hostels.
